While not generally talked about, female hair loss is very common and can be particularly damaging to a woman’s self-esteem. More and more women are now recognizing the reality of hair loss and there is a worldwide trend toward women taking control and seeking treatment. It is a misconception that only men are candidates for hair restoration. According to a survey conducted by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, 15.1% of surgical hair restoration patients in 2008 were women, up from 11.4% in 2004. In 2008, almost 32% of non-surgical hair restoration patients were women.
There has been increasing recognition of the role of hair transplant surgery for women. Modern hair transplantation involves redistributing hair from areas of the scalp where there is a relative abundance (such as the back of the head) to more cosmetically important areas where hair is noticeably thin.
At Follicle HT, we offer the full range of hair restoration options. There are 2 main techniques available for female hair restoration: follicular unit strip surgery (FUT) and follicular unit extraction surgery (FUE).
At this point, FUT is the preferred option for female patients. The reasons for this are that with FUT surgery, only the area of hair that is harvested for transplant is trimmed, whereas FUE surgery requires shaving a much larger area at the back and sides of the scalp, which many women do not consider to be acceptable. Furthermore, those that wear their hair long in the back are less concerned about the issue of donor scar visibility because it will always be concealed by the hair above and below.
Our team at Follicle HT is highly experienced at both techniques and our surgeons will help you to decide which technique is right for you.
The frontal hairline can be lowered by either by creating a new hairline using hair transplantation or by directly moving the existing hairline forward and excising the upper portion of the non-hair bearing forehead skin. Surgical hairline lowering is a very robust procedure that shortens the vertical height of the forehead in order to establish more esthetically pleasing facial proportions. It leaves a faint scar in the hairline that is generally very difficult to detect.
The results of forehead lowering surgery are immediate. With our technique, we can generally move the hairline forward and shorten the vertical height of the forehead by 2-5cm in a single, one-stage procedure without the need for tissue expanders. Hairline lowering surgery yields a hairline density and naturalness that could not be achieved with a single hair transplant session.
Hairline lowering surgery requires advanced training to perform and is not offered by most hair restoration or plastic surgery clinics. Dr. Korman and Dr. Solomon are part of a relatively small group of experienced facial cosmetic surgeons in North America who are qualified and experienced with hairline lowering surgery and they have one of the largest combined experiences in the Canada.
In addition to scalp hair loss, modern hair transplant techniques can also be used to address hair loss in the sensitive eyebrow and eyelash areas (often caused by aggressive plucking) as well as to repair scars or hairline distortion caused by previous trauma or cosmetic surgery.
Some of our patients will use medical treatments such as hair restoration injections in order to promote graft growth and prevent further loss of hair over time.
This treatment can be used after the hair transplant procedure to enhance the result.
The only medical treatment that has demonstrated effectiveness in high quality clinical trials and has been approved by the FDA for treatment of female pattern hair loss is topically applied minoxidil (Rogaine®). Topical minoxidil has been shown to stimulate new hair growth and to stop hair loss in women with pattern hair loss.
